The Two Paths

What is Day Trading?

Day trading is buying and selling within the same trading day. You're in and out of positions within minutes to hours, never holding overnight.

Time Commitment: High

You need to be actively watching the market during trading hours (6:30am - 1pm PT for futures)

Capital Required: $0

You can start with prop firms (funded accounts) and never risk your own money

Skill Level: Advanced

Requires quick decision-making, emotional control, and understanding of intraday manipulation

Profit Potential: High frequency

Multiple trades per day, smaller gains per trade but they add up

What is Swing Trading?

Swing trading is holding positions for days, weeks, or even months. You're capturing larger market moves by buying in extreme oversold areas and selling in extreme overbought areas.

Time Commitment: Low

You can check the market once or twice a day. No need to watch every tick.

Capital Required: $5,000+ minimum

You need real capital to see meaningful results (no prop firms for swing trading)

Skill Level: Intermediate

Requires patience, understanding of market cycles, and statistical backtesting

Profit Potential: Lower frequency

Only 8-12 trades per year, but each trade can generate significant returns (50-90% annually)

The Truth About Prop Firms

Can You Really Trade With No Money?

Yes - but only for day trading.

Prop firms (proprietary trading firms) give you access to funded accounts ranging from $25,000 to $250,000+. You pass their evaluation, and you can trade their capital and keep 70-90% of the profits.

The Catch:

  • You can't use prop firms for swing trading (they don't allow overnight holds)
  • You need to pass their evaluation first (costs $100-$500)
  • You must follow strict risk management rules

My Take:

If you don't have capital and want to day trade, prop firms are the way to go. Just make sure you have a proven strategy FIRST before you pay for an evaluation.

The Capital Reality for Swing Trading

Why You Need $5,000+ for Swing Trading

Here's the honest truth: if you want to swing trade and see real results, you need real capital.

With $500

Even a 50% return only gives you $250. That's not life-changing.

With $5,000

A 50% return gives you $2,500. Now we're talking.

With $10,000+

You can genuinely build wealth through swing trading.

My Recommendation:

If you have less than $5,000 → Focus on day trading with prop firms

If you have $5,000+ → Swing trading is your path to consistent, low-stress profits

Don't let anyone tell you that you can swing trade with $500 and change your life. It's mathematically impossible.

My Personal Approach

What I Do (And Why)

I do BOTH - but for different reasons.

My Swing Trading is where I make the majority of my money. It's my bread and butter. I only take 8-12 trades per year, but each one is calculated, backtested, and based on 20+ years of statistical data. This is where I've made over $1 million.

My Day Trading is more active and requires more focus. I trade institutional money flow and avoid intraday manipulation. It's higher frequency but requires more screen time.

If I had to choose ONE for a beginner? Start with day trading using prop firms. Why? Because you can learn without risking your own money. Once you're profitable and have built up capital, THEN add swing trading to your arsenal.
